Flowers are Blooming in Niagara Parks

Niagara Parks continues to be closed in response to the Covid-19 public health crises. During this time of isolation, we thought we’d bring nature to you, afterall, what connects us is what we find in nature.This spring let’s all energize by taking a step outside, breathe the fresh spring air, listen to the birds and notice what’s blooming around you.

What’s Blooming Now?

Here’s a look at what’s blooming during March & April across our 56-KM Niagara River corridor.

Spring Crocus – Crocus vernus

The crocuses are up! These brightly coloured early spring blooming blubs are a delight to see. Planted in the fall, this perennial flower is grown in many gardens, woodlands and can be seen popping up through your lawn!

Winter Aconite – Eranthis hyemalis

This charming perennial is bursting with bright yellow flowers. It’s one of the earliest bulbs to bloom in the springtime. This plant is native to woodlands in Europe and is currently blooming in various locations across Niagara Parks!

Witch Hazel – Hamamelis virginiana

Also known as American witch-hazel, this shrub is native to North America. Its delicate yellow petals are a refreshing change from the dark days of winter. Witch hazel is also known to have many medicinal benefits.

Snowdrops – Galanthus nivalis

Hanging down like a ‘drop’ before it opens, Snowdrops are one of the first bulbs to bloom in the spring. Their delicate perennial flowers will perform best in rock gardens and woodland gardens where their pure white flowers will brighten your day!

Hellebores

There are about 20 different species of Hellebores. One of the earliest to bloom, this perennial has beautiful flowers in a variety of colours and unusual shapes with attractive green foliage. Plant your hellebores in the shade. Once it’s established, it’s easy to care for and will greet you with a pretty spring flower.
