Niagara Falls, ON – Niagara Parks is honoured to host an evening of remembrance on Friday, July 5, 2024, to pay tribute to one of the most pivotal battles in Canadian history, the Battle of Chippawa.
In partnership with the City of Niagara Falls and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 396, Niagara Parks is extending an invitation to the public to mark the 210th anniversary of the Battle of Chippawa with a ceremony at Chippawa Battlefield Park on Friday, July 5 at 7p.m.
Fought on July 5, 1814, the Battle of Chippawa was the opening engagement of the Niagara Campaign of 1814 and is remembered as the longest, most violent, and bloodiest campaign of the War of 1812. The historic battlefield grounds have since been preserved by Niagara Parks, comprising 121 hectares (300 acres) adjacent to the Legends on the Niagara Golf Complex.
The ceremony will begin with a greeting by Master of Ceremonies Sherman Zavitz and a message from Niagara Parks Chair Bob Gale. A historical address will be given to provide context and significance of the Battle of Chippawa, a remembrance prayer will be led by Canon Powell and Joseph Shawana will perform an Indigenous honour song. The ceremony will continue with the laying of wreaths to honour the fallen, and a solemn minute of silence will be observed.
The 41st Regiment of Foot Fifes and Drums will perform, adding to the historical ambiance of the event. Closing remarks will conclude the official ceremony, after which the Colour Party will march off.
Post-ceremony events include refreshments, a musket demonstration, and a battle talk. Attendees are also invited to visit Branch 396 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
