Preserving the nature of the game

In 2014, our Legends on the Niagara golf complex achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Learn what this means and how Niagara Parks is dedicated to preserving the natural environment at all of our courses.

Preserving the Nature of the Game

Niagara Parks is dedicated to our mission of preserving the environmental and cultural heritage of the Niagara River corridor, and our golf courses are no exception. In 2014, our Legends on the Niagara golf complex achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.

What is it?

This certification means that you can hit the championship links at Legends on the Niagara golf complex knowing that you’re helping to protect the environment as you play.

Niagara Parks worked on achieving this designation with Audubon International for ten years, beginning in 2004. Since then, the golf courses have implemented a number of environmental stewardship initiatives and effective wildlife, habitat and natural resource management to ensure our greens are sustainably used and responsibly conserved.

You can see these initiatives at work around the ponds and streams, where the grass is permitted to grow higher than normal in order to buffer runoff, or at one of the five pollinator gardens found throughout the grounds, where a diversity of native plants help to create attractive habitats for Ontario’s pollinators. Pollinating species like bumblebees, butterflies and hummingbirds play a vital role in supporting our rich ecosystem, but over the past decade, the number of pollinators has declined significantly in Ontario.

Additional environmentally friendly measures in place include designated “no spray” zones and the reduced use of chemicals and fertilizers, a thorough integrated Pest Management Program, soil management programs and storm-water collection/retention efforts, regular water testing and aquatic insect sampling.

For your next round, enjoy a golf facility that is maintained to the highest possible standards, while helping to preserve the nature of the game.

Responsibility meets expertise

Many think that an environmentally golf course is a brown golf course. That can’t be further from the truth! Many Audubon-certified courses are consistently ranked among the top-rated courses in North America.

Golfer Approved

Of course some elements are different at a golf course that takes measures to protect its environment, such as grass that is kept higher around ponds and streams to buffer chemical run-off. Knowing what measures are in place and why they’re there, Niagara Parks golfers are always thrilled to learn that choosing Niagara Parks Golf means their dollars are supporting this important work at our courses and across the entire 56-kilometre Niagara River corridor.
